A Rio Claro farmer escaped death after he was shot and injured with a trap gun while going to his garden on Monday.

Mohanpersad Bahadur, 62, was found more than seven hours later by his brother who went in search of him after he did not return home.

Bahadur was walking along a track off Tabaquite Charuma Trace, Navet Village, Rio Claro around 8 am on the way to his dasheen garden.

When he reached about one and a quarter-mile into the track he was shot on his left thigh with a trap gun that was set across the track.

Bahadur’s brother Ramlick Bahadur found him around 3.20 pm lying on the track. Ramlick told the police that his brother was supposed to have returned home around midday and when he did not show up, he went in search of him.

Ramlick contacted other relatives and with their assistance, he was placed on a makeshift stretcher.

They made it out to the roadway around 4.30 pm and the police escorted them to the Rio Claro Health Centre.

Bahadur was then transferred to the Sangre Grande Hospital for further treatment.

Police took possession of the trap gun which contained a spent 12 gauge cartridge.
