A man who was believed to have been involved in a robbery in Couva on Friday morning, was fatally shot during a police-involved shooting.

The victim has been identified as Zithari Newark of Mary Street in Couva.

In addition, three others who were said to be the victim’s accomplices, have all escaped. At the time of posting this report, police were said to be searching for them.

According to a police report, at about 3:30 am on Friday 25 September 2020, a team of officers from the Central Division were responding to a report of a robbery, when they saw four men near a silver Nissan motor car, at the scene of the crime. The men, spotting the officers, allegedly whipped out their guns and opened fire on them.

The officers, in keeping with the use of force policy, returned fire on the suspects.

Three of the men entered the vehicle and sped away, while the fourth (Newark) was found on the ground, bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said a firearm and a quantity of ammunition were found near him.

He was taken to the Chaguanas District Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.
