Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley yesterday thanked UNC MP Saddam Hosein for correcting him on the date for the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections after Rowley gave the wrong THA date.

In Parliament yesterday Rowley spoke on a motion on an Election and Boundaries Commission (EBC) report on Tobago’s boundaries. In that debate he gave the date for THA election as January 24, 2021 which he said had been set out. He said Nomination Day was January 4.

But Hosein, speaking soon after corrected Rowley, pointing out that it was stated yesterday that the THA poll is January 25.

Rowley, closing the brief debate, thanked Hosein for the correction on the date. He said, “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings…”

But Rowley also zeroed in on the fact that Hosein had acknowledged the EBC is the duly constituted body in handling boundaries. Rowley said it was “comforting” and he “was very happy” to hear this from the Opposition.

He said he hoped Hosein’s statement would erase in the public’s mind the Opposition Leader’s complaints that the PNM won elections because it had three small Diego Martin seats and she only had Siparia.

On Hosein’s statement, Rowley added, “I must be the only one who believes there’s hope for our colleagues on the other side.”

Rowley noted the EBC’s order on the Tobago boundaries stated that no alterations were needed in the boundaries of the 12 THA areas.

He noted Tobago’s electorate has grown in each of the 12 THA seats by 200 and Tobago’s electorate has risen from the 2016 THA election figure of 48,677 to 50,789 currently. (GA)
