Barataria/San Juan MP Saddam Hosein in the House of Representatives yesterday.

UNC’s San Juan and St Augustine units yesterday issued releases supporting incumbent political leader Kamla Persad- Bissesar to continue on as party leader.

UNC MP Saddam Hosein said via a statement,” Her decisive and strong leadership has moved the UNC to an institution which promotes social justice and a movement towards the advancement of merit, ability and integrity.”

“Through her leadership as Prime Minister she made tough decisions which may not have been popular at the time but she took the risk to ensure the people benefited. During her time as Prime Minister, Trinidad and Tobago has seen an unprecedented rate of development.”

“Her vision remains one of putting the people first as has always been her priority. She has always ensured that the citizens of our country are given equal opportunity and has advocated for fairness and equality. Mrs Persad-Bissessar has always been a strong voice for the youth of our great nation. As the youngest Member of Parliament in the 12th Parliament, she gave me an opportunity to contest a marginal seat which demonstrates the confidence she places in the youth,”

Hosein noted Persad-Bissessar has also broken “many glass ceilings by being the first female Attorney General, Leader of the Opposition and Prime Minister.”

The UNC’s St Augustine chairman Amrit Mahabir said via a release, ” We welcome any member to contest the leadership but we will not be divided by a few to cause (sic) disharmony and divisiveness within our party on the nomination process.”

“We have full belief with the internal Elections Committee to conduct free and fair elections (sic) “

Mahabir added, ” Mrs Persad- Bissessar have (sic) demonstrated strong leadership qualities and a vision in investing in the youths of our nation and vibrant leaders in Parliament.”

Former minister Vasant Bharath has challenged Persad-Bissessar for the leadership of the UNC.

The party’s internal elections are carded for December 6.
