Needy people with children on the island of Tobago are in need of a lot of assistance.

That’s according to Devika “Sister Devi” Gadjahar, the head of Red Chariot Foundation while at the Mt Pleasant Community Centre, Carnbee, Tobago.

Speaking with Guardian Media on Saturday when the Red Chariot Foundation donated hampers, Gadjahar said a small group made the journey to Tobago from San Juan, Trinidad on the fast ferry.

She said several people in Tobago had contacted the RCF seeking assistance.

This was the third time the RCF was making donations in Tobago.

Gadjahar said “Tobagonians are our brethren, just like any community in Trinidad. We are one nation, and it doesn’t matter where our people reside. Once there is a need, Red Charity Foundation will respond. We have been serving families in the rural villages for over 10 years in T&T. This is our third charitable event in Tobago which is the largest event so far.”

She added the response was overwhelming as many people showed up at the centre seeking a hamper.

“Families from all over Tobago were identified by two criteria; those with children and those that were unemployed. We want to thank all those that contributed to this noble initiative and for anyone who would like to donate to our cause, they can send a message to Red Chariot Foundation Facebook page.”

Gadjahar said donations came from several farmers and families who saw the need to assist others during this difficult time.

RCF executive member Anil Bhagwatsaran said the foundation has been around for the last 10 years and is a registered NGO.

He said the RCF has built up a good reputation over the years and ensured that the charitable work on both islands would continue. The event was facilitated in Tobago through the assistance of Gosnel Nelson and Henry Smith, both are Tobagonians and identified families that required assistance.

Gadjahar said the RCF is expected to journey to Bethel and Moriah today to hand deliver hampers to families who were unable to make it to the distribution on Saturday.
