House gutted by fire at Ottley Street Scarborough Tobago on Monday night.

Four people have been left homeless following a fire at a family home at Ottley Street, Scarborough, on Monday night.

Divisional Fire Officer of Tobago Operations David Joseph-Thomas told Guardian Media the damage is estimated at just over one million dollars.

He said the occupants of the house, a mother and three children, were not at home at the time of the incident.

He said fire officials received the distress call just after 8:00 pm and by the time the officers, assigned to the Scarborough Fire station, arrived at the scene, the building was well ablaze.

The Divisional Fire Officer said initially there were challenges in accessing water to extinguish the fire. However, the Water and Sewerage Authority provided a supply but it was too late to prevent the building from being severely damaged.

According to Joseph-Thomas, the building was a rental unit owned by Kurt James.

He said the structural instability of the building prevented investigators from concluding the cause of the blaze.
