Sixty-eight nationals quarantined after returning from cruise

The following is a press release from the Ministry of Health:

The Ministry of Health advises the public that sixty-eight (68) nationals who returned to Trinidad and Tobago from a Caribbean cruise today, were placed under immediate quarantine. These nationals have been quarantined due to the presence of other persons on the cruise ship who tested positive for COVID-19. None of these Trinidad and Tobago nationals have tested positive for COVID-19 at this time.

All passengers from the cruise ship were transported to the Piarco International Airport on a specific flight with no other public passengers. They were immediately screened by public health officials and transported to the assigned quarantine facility, with the assistance of the Protective Services and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force. All sixty-eight nationals will be held in quarantine, for a minimum of fourteen (14) days, and monitored closely by medical professionals.

The nationals are being quarantined at an isolated location, in a remote part of Trinidad and Tobago, and will be provided with the required amenities during this period.

All of the necessary infection control protocols (including the provision of Personal Protective Equipment to all relevant personnel and the strict sanitization of surfaces) are consistently and strictly being adhered to.

The Ministry of Health again urges all persons to refrain from any unnecessary travel at this time.

Members of the public are also urged to take the following personal hygiene measures to protect themselves and their loved ones from COVID-19:

·           Wash your hands properly with soap and water

o   Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if water and soap are not available

·           Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze

o   Dispose of tissue immediately after using

o   Cough and sneeze into the crook of your elbow if you do not have a tissue

·           Avoid touching your face

·           Practise social distancing (e.g. no kissing, hugging or hand-shaking, avoid mass gatherings)

·           Sanitize hard surfaces (e.g. tabletops, handrails, doorknobs and trolleys) as often as possible.

·           Avoid close contact with people who have flu-like symptoms

·           Stay home if you are ill

The Ministry reminds the public that it has implemented two parallel health care systems. One public health system is focused on addressing confirmed cases of COVID-19 and specific facilities will be used for this purpose. The public is therefore encouraged to access essential public health care services via the other existing health facilities.
