A 38-year-old soldier has been granted $40,000 bail after being charged with two offences including breaching a protection order and common assault.

Police said yesterday that Lance Corporal Anson Allister Young appeared before Magistrate Brambhanan Dubay in the Sangre Grande Magistrate’s Virtual Court and was ordered to report to the Matura Police Station every Wednesday between the hours of 9 am and 6 pm.

He was also advised not to make contact with the victims directly or indirectly.

On July 10, a protection order spanning three years was granted to a female known to Young.

It is reported that on August 11 around 7.30 pm, the woman and her children returned home in a vehicle driven by her brother, when it was alleged that the accused drove up behind the said vehicle.

He was allegedly driving a Defence Force vehicle and dressed in his Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force uniform.

It was further alleged that he alighted from the vehicle and approached the vehicle in which the woman was seated.

He then started to use obscenities towards her and hurled accusations while damaging a laptop and cell phone belonging to the victim during the fracas.

It was also alleged that he then took out what appeared to be a pistol from his waist and pointed it at the woman’s head telling her that he would “done her tonight.” The children began crying, with the youngest started vomiting.

Young reportedly left the area, following which the woman made a report to the Matura Police Station.

The matter was referred to the Gender-Based Violence Unit of the Eastern Division and W/Sgt Felix conducted interviews and the scene was processed.

On August 24, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) advised that charges be laid against Young.

He was charged on the same date for the offences.

Investigations were spearheaded by Head of the Gender-Based Violence Unit, Superintendent Claire Guy-Alleyne and supervised by Inspector Stanley. The matter was adjourned to September 22.
