Former United National Congress (UNC) councillor Phillip Gonzales, who was stabbed four times following a political rally over the weekend, was unable to cast his ballot during yesterday’s General Election.

Gonzales, 58, remains warded in a stable condition at the San Fernando General Hospital.Candidate for Moruga/Tableland Michelle Benjamin said yesterday that Gonzales was still in a lot of pain and his colleagues were thankful that they were able to speak to him yesterday for the first time since the stabbing.

Sean Premchand said Gonzales remained warded at the hospital and was recuperating well. He said the wounds were too serious and it was not possible for him to vote.

Gonzales was stabbed on Saturday night after attending a rally in Basse Terre, Moruga. Police said he was sitting inside a maxi-taxi during a motorcade when a man entered the vehicle around 9.30 pm and began arguing with him.

Gonzales ordered the man out the maxi but the assailant pulled out a knife and stabbed him four times. He suffered injuries to the right side of his chest, arm and shoulder. The assailant remains at large. This is not the only violent incident to have been reported in the leadup to elections.

Two weeks ago, a passenger in a car was attacked and beaten with a baton by a man who was dressed in a red jersey. This incident is said to have taken place in Oropouche during a PNM motorcade.

No one was arrested and the matter is still under investigation.
