Suruj tells UNC: Criminal to create doubt about vaccines

“Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar should bring together all of the medical professionals in her party to voluntarily work with the PNM (People’s National Movement) Government to manage home quarantined COVID cases.”

That was the call by former United National Congress Tabaquite MP Suruj Rambachan yesterday.

His call came after Opposition MP Dr Roodal Moonilal appealed for caution on the Chinese Sinopharm Beijing vaccine which Trinidad and Tobago will be receiving.

But Rambachan said, “The government has set a clear policy position that only World Health Organisation (WHO) approved vaccines will be used. Now that the WHO has cleared the Chinese vaccines why is the Opposition still opposing its use?”

He said, “To advance your political goals by creating doubts that could affect lives is criminal.”

In a post on Facebook after he visited a district hospital, Rambachan called for UNC medical professionals to work with Government to manage home quarantined COVID cases.

”The government doctors and nurses are overstretched. Despite this they are working excessively hard. (Yesterday) I spent four hours at the Chaguanas Health facility to get a chest X-ray and COVID tests. It is clear that if the trend continues the system will collapse – unless you can build up on the home quarantine.”

“Here is your chance for real service to the people who need it. In the current scenario, home quarantine will be an option. We may also need small oxygen cylinders in those homes,” he said.

Former UNC MP Ramona Ramdial also supported Rambachan’s position.

“I agree 100 per cent with Dr Rambachan that Government and Opposition should come together to fight this COVID pandemic – rally around the flag. I know the Opposition Leader made a call a few weeks now for Government and Opposition to work together and so they should,” Ramdial said.

She added she found it difficult to understand Moonilal’s statement on the Chinese vaccines.

“But vaccines are the only thing to safeguard against loss of life as they’re known to prevent hospitalization and death. Leaderships in other countries are working together. The UNC has several health professionals, former ministers and SWRHA chairman. Everyone should put their minds together and put the politicking aside.”
