The Trinidad and Tobago Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL) has confirmed that a fire which began last night at the Guanapo Landfill has been brought under control.

An official statement from the company says it is monitoring the resultant smoke and its impact on surrounding communities.

The following is the statement issued today by SWMCOL…

At approximately 9:35 pm last evening, the management team of the Trinidad and Tobago Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL) was alerted of a fire that ignited on the western end of the Guanapo Landfill, an area that is assigned to green waste.

While the fire was contained by 3:57 am on November 17th some smoke is currently impacting nearby communities. Air quality tests conducted by SWMCOL thus far proved to be non-toxic. Nevertheless, we ask the neighbouring community, site users, and those with respiratory conditions to proceed with caution at this time.

SWMCOL’s management and staff at the landfill are working tirelessly to have this issue rectified in the shortest possible timeframe and an investigation is ongoing into the cause of the fire.
