A 42-year-old Syrian national, who came to this country three years ago, has been arrested for having a fake work permit.

The foreigner, who works as a chef at a Syrian restaurant, has been residing in Chaguanas.

Police said on Wednesday he went to the Point Fortin Licensing Office to apply for a driving permit.  He was asked to produce his work permit, but upon examining it the licencing officer observed that it looked fake.

The Point Fortin Police were contacted, and officers went to the Licensing Office, took possession of the work permit, and also took the foreign national to the station.

Guardian Media understands the police then contacted immigration officers who confirmed that the permit was fraudulent after they found no record of it in their database.

The Syrian national currently is detained at the Point Fortin Police Station and is expected to be charged with uttering a forged document.

Sgt Singh is investigating.
