Chairman of the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation and councillor for Biche/Charuma, Glen Ram, has withdrawn his candidacy for the upcoming December 2 Local Government Election.
Ram told Guardian Media earlier today that his move came in light of the ongoing court matter on corruption charges laid against him in May.
"I have informed the party's hierarchy of my decision. It all came about because of the matter I have before the courts,” he said. “I want the courts to clear my name hence the reason I would not be considering myself to run for the upcoming elections."
The Anti-Corruption Investigation Bureau (ACIB) has laid a total of 1,093 charges between 2015 and April 2019 — including charges against a former Attorney General and a former UNC Senator.
Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi indicated this in Parliament on Wednesday while replying to Opposition questions on the ACIB’s work.
He said there were no prosecutions or convictions over 2015-2016. But in 2017, some 144 charges were laid with zero convictions.
