Nurse held with over $1 million in cocaine attempting to board flight for Barbados

A geriatric nurse pleaded not guilty to a charge of cocaine trafficking, when she appeared before an Arima Magistrate, after allegedly attempting to board a flight to Barbados, with cocaine concealed in her luggage.

Natasha Wilkie, 38, of Hitler Street, Trou Macaque, Laventille, was at the Piarco International Airport, around 7:30am on Friday 21st April, 2017, preparing to board flight BW415, destined for Barbados, when she was stopped and interviewed at a security checkpoint.

President Carmona off to Barbados

President Anthony Carmona left the country this morning for Barbados, where he will deliver a lecture titled, "Youth and Caribbean Identity: Redefining Caribbean Pride for the 21st Century Youth", a statement by the Office of the President said. 

A statement by the President's Office said this forum is being hosted by the University of the West Indies Student Today Alumni Tomorrow organization, headed by the Office of the Vice Chancellor, UWI Cave Hill, Barbados.

The President will return on Friday 21st April, 2017.

Soca Warriors to play Barbados next Friday

Trinidad and Tobago’s Men Senior Team will face Barbados’ Senior Team in an international friendly on Friday March 10th, 2017 at 7 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

The match was secured by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association following a late pull out by Suriname from the originally carded friendly in Paramaribo on March 10th.

The T&T Team is currently engaged in a training camp under head coach Dennis Lawrence in preparations for the two 2018 World Cup Qualifiers scheduled to play at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Regionally: Fuel prices rise in Barbados

Barbadians are facing an increase in fuel prices from midnight tonight, with increases in gasoline, diesel and kerosene.

The price of gasoline will move from Bds$2.78 per litre to $2.98 per litre, an increase of 20 cents per litre.

The price of diesel will rise by two cents from $2.15 to $2.17, and kerosene will now retail at $1.13, up from $1.04.Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) prices will also be adjusted from midnight, Sunday.

Trini man jailed for two years in Barbados for drug trafficking

 A 54-year-old Trinidad national has been sentenced to two years in jail in Barbados, after he appeared in the District “B’ Magistrates’ Court on a number of drug charges, the Barbados Today has reported.

Dexter Taylor was arrested on arrival at the Grantley Adams International Airport from Port-of-Spain last Friday after a search revealed three packages of cocaine hidden in false compartments of a haversack he was carrying.

He was later charged with possession, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and importation of cocaine.

Tropical Wave moves towards Barbados; Hurricane Hunter on another mission this morning

A Hurricane Hunter will once again fly into the Tropical Wave north of Trinidad and Tobago to see if it has developed into a cyclone.

A reconnaissance mission yesterday did not find enough to determine that the system had moved from a Tropical Wave to a Depression, Storm or Hurricane.

Barbados seeks to introduce e-textbooks in secondary schools from next year

Barbados is seeking to introduce e-textbooks for secondary school students beginning next year.

A report in the Barbados Today newspaper says this will be dependent on at least 90 per cent of the required textbooks being available in digital format.

It's being introduced by the Caribbean Shared Educational Resources Service (CSERS), a student e-portal programme.

Project Director Beverly Smith-Hinkson said her organization, DataLore Inc was working with relevant stakeholders to make digital textbooks here a reality.  

DataLore Inc oversees the CSERS project.

US LNG breaks into Caricom market; Barbados now importing LNG from United States

Trinidad and Tobago's close neighbour, Barbados has become the first Caribbean country to begin importing Liquified Natural Gas from the United States.

This is according to a report by the US Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy, which also shows that the prices paid by Barbados are in some cases more than double the amount of which this country is exporting LNG.

The report shows that six shipments of domestically-produced US LNG left the port of Hialeah, Florida between February 5th and April 29th, 2016, bound for Barbados.

Barbados AG: "Take comfort we're not as bad as Trinidad"

BARBADOS: Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite has suggested that Barbadians can take comfort in the fact that the island’s crime situation is no where near as bad as that of neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago, which has recorded over 80 murders in just two months.
