Beetham man held for possession of a gun and ammunition

A 25-year-old man from Beetham Gardens has been detained and a pistol and a quantity of marijuana seized by police following an anti-crime exercise.

WPC Malaika Ramgoolie and officers attached to the Port of Spain Division Task Force conducted the exercise on August 7th in the Sea Lots area.

According to police reports, during the exercise, officers proceeded to Pioneer Drive, where they had cause to stop and search a 25-year-old man of Beetham Gardens. 

A Glock pistol fitted with a magazine containing 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition was discovered in his possession. 

Police maintain heavy presence in Beetham Gardens

Police are describing the situation at the Beetham as tense as residents are expressing outrage following the shooting of 19-year-old Akiel Thomas by police.

Police are maintaining that the teen was armed.

To discourage lawless forms of protests the police say they will keep a heavy presence of officers along the highway and bus route near the area.

Police present to ensure free flow of traffic on Beetham Highway

Police officers are stationed along the Beetham Highway to ensure the free flow of traffic.

The residents blocked the road this morning causing traffic.

We understand that action maybe retaliation for a police exercise in the area, during which 2 alleged gang leaders were taken into custody earlier this morning.

Parts of the Beetham highway and the priority bus route are currently blocked by rioting Beetham residents.

CNC3 understands that police are mobilizing resources and heading to the scene.
