Police shoot and kill 19-year-old in Beetham

A 19-year-old is shot and killed by police this morning. The victim is identified as Akiel Thomas also known as Alkaline. According to police at around 6:40 am officers from Port of Spain CID and the interagency task force were conducting an exercise and upon reaching hell yard Beetham Gardens they noticed Thomas with a firearm, police tell CNC3 news that they called out the teen who then pointed the firearm at the officers. He did not open fire but officers shot at the 19-year-old who was hit in the chest. He was taken to hospital where he died.

Relatives of Beetham murder victim deny death was reprisal for murder of 'Fish'

Relatives of a 19-year-old man who was shot and killed on Monday evening claim he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Shortly after 8 last evening, Abraham Quamina, a student of UTT's O'Meara campus had just finished speaking with a woman when he was caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting.

He was hit once in the head.

Two other men remain warded at hospital following the incident.

Shortly after the shooting, reports surfaced on social media that the killing was a reprisal for the murder of an alleged gang leader earlier during the day.

Police seize Baretta pistol and loaded magazine in Beetham Gardens

A pistol and one loaded magazine have been seized by officers of the Besson Street Police Station.

CNC3 News understands during an anti-crime exercise on Thursday, officers acting on information proceeded to Phase 5, Beetham Gardens, in an area known as the ‘Garrison’, where a search was conducted.

There, the officers found one brown and silver 9mm Beretta pistol and a magazine loaded with four rounds of 9mm ammunition.

No one was arrested in connection with the find.

Beetham entrepreneurs thriving in ‘Hell Yard’

When people hear the word “Beetham”, it conjures up nightmarish images of an area stigmatised with rampant poverty, crime, and violence.

With acrid smoke billowing from the landfill and gun smoke emanating from the enclave, motorists drive through the Beetham Highway gauntlet at maximum speed with their windows up and car doors locked fearful of missiles thrown at their vehicles or debris strewn on the road in attempted robberies in gridlock traffic.

WASA work to affect part of Beetham Highway tonight

The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is advising of traffic restrictions along the East-bound carriageway of the Beetham Highway from late tonight, east of the lighthouse in the vicinity of the PTSC compound.

WASA says this has become necessary in order to carry out repairs to a leaking 8” pipeline at this location.

These restrictions will be in place from 10 pm on Friday March 2, 2018 to 6 am on Saturday March 3, 2018

The public is being asked to use alternative routes where possible.

Minister wants to know who ordered road works on Beetham that led to traffic this morning

Works Minister Rohan Sinanan has called for a report on who dropped the ball on the Beetham project this morning.

Unauthorized works on the project caused traffic congestion for hours heading into Port-of-Spain.

When the project was launched three weeks ago the minister said works will be limited to weekends to ensure there is no inconvenience to the country's workforce.
