Venezuelan Opposition Leader Juan Guaido says he has started the “final phase” of his plan to oust the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
He is calling on Venezuelans and the military to back him.
Guaido, in a video posted on his Twitter account, was accompanied by men in military uniform and opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez, who has been placed under house arrest.
Videos emerged on social media showing military personnel calling on Venezuelans to join Guaido and “join freedom.”
Images posted to Twitter show Venezuelans gathering to protest.
Thousands of government opponents have flooded some of the principal streets in Venezuela’s capital to pressure the government to hold a referendum vote this year on Nicolas Maduro’s presidency.
The protesters are chanting, “It’s going to fall, it’s going to fall, the government is going to fall.”
They are carrying Venezuelan flags and signs with slogans such as “We are 30 million reasons to revoke him.”
The demonstrators have come from states all over the country.
Today's protest follows a massive public demonstration on Wednesday.
