Five-year-old bride and nine-year-old groom rescued

A five-year-old child and her nine-year-old groom were rescued by India’s Child Welfare department, just as they stood at the altar. The event took place as a ritual. 

Children's Rights activist Achyuta Rao from the charity Balala Hakkula Sangham said: "As per their custom, no relative will enter their house after the death of a family member unless they perform an 'auspicious event' and celebrate it."

SWAHA repeats support for raising age of child marriages to 18

The local branch of SWAHA International, is repeating its support for the age of child marriages to be 18 years old.

SWAHA issued a statement expressing its support just before the Senate met Tuesday to begin debate on the legislation.

The following is SWAHA's statement:

"As the Senate debate focuses on child marriage, topmost priority must be given to the child, who is the key factor in this entire issue. I appeal to all involved in this debate to do the conscionable thing and place the child first among all considerations.

First Lady speaks out against child marriages

First Lady Reema Carmona is speaking out against child marriages and is calling for legislation to be put in place to protect children in this regard.

Carmona is a member of the First Ladies Meeting Group which works with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to highlight, proffer and execute solutions to issues facing teenage girls and the type of investments needed for young people in the Caribbean to fulfil their full potential.

Psychologists Association joins call for end of child marriages

The Trinidad and Tobago Association of Psychologists has joined the call for the outlaw of child marriages.

The TTAP issued the following statement on the matter:

"It is the responsibility of a progressive society to do all in its power to protect children from all manner of harm that arises from physical, emotional and sexual abuse, incest, rape, violence and trauma in all its forms. 

PNM Women's League against child marriages

The Women’s League of the People’s National Movement outrightly condemns the practice of child marriages and joins the many voices which advocate for the removal from our statute books, all laws that permit this practice.
