COP hoping for free and fair elections on Monday

The political leader of the Congress of the People (COP) is hoping for free and fair elections on Monday, when the local government poll takes place.

Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan describes the recent issue with ballot papers as unfortunate, and is hoping the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) would have sorted matters out, so that all systems and protocols won't be compromised come voting day.

COP Leader concerned about Local Government Reform Law and Elections

Political Leader of the Congress of the People (COP), Carolyn Seepersad Bachan, is keeping her cards close to her chest, with regard to the COP’s contesting of the upcoming local government elections.

Mrs Seepersad Bachan has hinted that the COP may be combining forces with other parties on the political landscape, but would not use the word coalition to describe the arrangement.

She says it is important to get the arrangements right, noting that under the People’s Partnership, the arrangement featured one dominant partner, and several small partners.

Congress of the People on 2020 Budget

 

The political leader of the Congress of the People says Monday’s budget failed to address urgent measures needed to transform the country's economy.

According to Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan, the fiscal measures announced only appear to achieve short term political gains, as opposed to sustainable development.

She said the government's macroeconomic position was out of sync with reality.

COP mourns passing of former president

The Congress of the People (COP) has joined others in sending condolences to the family of former president George Maxwell Richards who passed away on Monday.

The COP has issued the following statement of their political leader, Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan;

"On behalf of all members of the Congress of the People, I wish to extend heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the entire nation on the passing of former President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, George Maxwell Richards who served from 2003 to 2013.

COP sets November 19th as date of election of political leader

The Congress of the People (COP) has set Sunday November 19th as the date for the election of a political leader.

This follows a consent order from the court for a meeting of the National Executive on membership applications.

COP wants quick Government action on Enterprise

The Congress of the People is calling on the Government to move urgently to address the crime situation in Enterprise, Chaguanas.

The COP issued the following statement on the matter:

"This morning another man was gunned down in Enterprise Village, Chaguanas at about 10 a.m. This is the second murder since the killing of Sylvan Alexis, the brother of reputed gang leader Selwyn ‘Robocop’Alexis. Other shooting victims are still in hospital.

COP leaders sees no positives in Cabinet realignment

The Congress of the People (COP) does not see much value in the realignment of the Cabinet announced on Monday.

The COP issued this response to the Cabinet changes.

"Yesterday morning, the Prime Minister announced the reshuffle of his Cabinet which was heralded by a media release from his office describing the announcement as “anticipated”. 

April 24th, Prakash Ramadhar's last day as COP leader

The Congress of the People has set April 24th as the day for the election of a new executive, including the post of political leader.

The current COP leader, Prakash Ramadhar has indicated that he will be stepping down from the post.

"The official Notice of the COP Leadership Elections 2016 was issued today (Wednesday) as required by the COP constitution.
