Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has extended condolenced to the family of Nobel Laureate, Derek Walcott who passed away today after a long period of illness.
The condolences were offered on behalf of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago and on his own behalf.
The Prime Minister said that “Walcott was a prolific writer whose creative works were strongly influenced by Caribbean culture and who also sought to share the West Indian experience with the world".
Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar has extended condolences to the family of poet Derek Walcott who passed away at his St Lucia home this morning.
Persad-Bissessar issues the following statement on his passing.
"It was with deep sorrow that I learned of the passing of world renowned poet and Nobel Laureate Sir Derek Walcott.
Born in St Lucia, Sir Derek spent a considerable part of his life in Trinidad and Tobago, after moving to this country in 1953.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles has extended condolences on behalf of the University of the West Indies (UWI) community to the family and loved ones of Sir Derek Walcott who passed away on Friday morning.
Walcott, an alumnus of The UWI Mona Campus, graduated in 1953 and was awarded an honorary (DLitt) in 1973.
Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly has expressed sadness over the death of Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott.
Walcott died at his home in St Lucia this morning.
A statement from the Ministry of Community Development, Culture says "Walcott gave us in his work a vision of ourselves as Caribbean people in a shared space, unique in the world, worthy of celebration".

Walcott passed away at his home in Cap Estate, north St Lucia about 7:30 a.m. today after a prolonged illness. He was 87.
Family members confirmed his death to St Lucian journalists this morning.
Ernie Seon, a St Lucian journalist who works with the Caribbean Media Corporation, told CNC3 that Walcott had been suffering with kidney problems and had been on a dialysis machine for some time now.
