Five families evacuated in Cedros

Five families from Bamboo Village, Cedros, had to be evacuated yesterday evening, after massive coastal erosion caused a house to fall into the sea. Three homes belonging to Leroy Joseph, Deomatie Mohammed and another resident were also on the brink of collapse.

About 400 metres of the Bamboo Village Extension Road collapsed into the Columbus Bay during yesterday’s incident. Electricity poles were also torn down, rendering the village without power and throwing them into darkness at nightfall and water lines were also dislodged.

Point Fortin residents seek medical treatment following strong oil odour

Several residents of Point Fortin, including school children, have been forced to undergo medical treatment due to strong odours believed to have stemmed from an oil spill.

Petrotrin has issued a statement saying officials are currently investigating reports of strong hydrocarbon odours in the Techier Village and Mahaica communities neighbouring its Point Fortin operations.

Petrotrin says that upon receiving initial reports earlier today, the company’s emergency responders visited the identified areas and commenced investigations.

Internationally: Over 25,000 evacuated as Category 4 cyclone bears down on Australia

Thousands of Australians fled their homes on Monday as a powerful cyclone bore down on coastal towns in Queensland, where authorities urged 30,000 people to evacuate low-lying areas most at risk from tidal surges and winds of up to 185 miles per hour.

Cyclone Debbie is expected to gather strength before making landfall in the northeast state early on Tuesday, with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a category four storm, just one rung below the most dangerous wind speed level.

Petrotrin workers evacuated due to odours from line leak

Petrotrin says it evacuated workers from its Administration Headquarters in Pointe-a-Pierre on Wednesday, after the discovery of a line leak that led to hydrocarbon odours.

The state-owned oil company says air-testing continued today.

The company issued the following statement Thursday afternoon.

"On 2017 March 01, Petrotrin officials detected and contained a line leak at its Pointe-a-Pierre refinery.

Further investigations were conducted in response to reports of hydrocarbon odours affecting employees at its Administration Headquarters and environs. 

UWI evacuated after bomb threat

A bomb threat forced the evacuation of the University of the West Indies' St Augustine Campus this morning but following checks by the relevant authorities, students and staff were given the all clear to return .

The following is a statement from UWI on the matter:

"The University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine Campus received a bomb threat today, June 7, 2016 at the Faculty of Social Sciences. As a result of this threat, the appropriate measures were taken to ensure the safety of the campus community.
