Address by President of the Industrial Court Deborah Thomas-Felix, Consider debilitating effects of violence and harassment at all levels

Since the last open­ing of the law term there has been sev­er­al de­vel­op­ments in­ter­na­tion­al­ly which I be­lieve may have di­rect im­pact on the work­place glob­al­ly and in Trinidad and To­ba­go.

One such de­vel­op­ment is the new In­ter­na­tion­al Labour Or­gan­i­sa­tion’s (ILO) Con­ven­tion which was adopt­ed in Gene­va, Switzer­land, in June this year.

Six appointed as Industrial Court members

Six new mem­bers have been ap­point­ed to the In­dus­tri­al Court.

The new mem­bers re­cent­ly re­ceived their in­stru­ments of ap­point­ment from the Pres­i­dent of the In­dus­tri­al Court Deb­o­rah Thomas-Fe­lix who wel­comed them to the court.

They were al­so greet­ed by the chair­man of the Es­sen­tial Ser­vices Di­vi­sion Lawrence

Achong who was reap­point­ed as chair­man and the court’s ex­ec­u­tive.

OWTU granted injunction by Industrial Court

The OWTU has been granted an injunction by the Industrial Court barring Petrotrin from be­gin­ning the process of ter­mi­nat­ing work­ers.

That is un­til a sub­stan­tive com­plaint brought against the com­pa­ny for al­leged­ly com­mit­ting an in­dus­tri­al re­la­tions of­fence is de­ter­mined.

The OW­TU is al­leg­ing that Petrotrin com­mit­ted the of­fence by fail­ing to con­sult with it be­fore tak­ing the de­ci­sion to close the com­pa­ny and send home al­most 5,000 work­ers.
