Union criticises city officials for $140,000 Christmas tree

Mem­bers of the Amal­ga­mat­ed Work­er’s Union (AWU) yes­ter­day crit­i­cised the Port-of-Spain City Cor­po­ra­tion for spend­ing $140,000 on a Christ­mas tree. The union said the ex­pen­di­ture was ev­i­dence of mis­man­age­ment of funds at a time when some 1,200 work­ers aren’t be­ing paid or giv­en the tools to per­form their jobs.

Garvin Nicholas: Brace for nasty politics in 2020

Former Attorney General, Garvin Nicholas, is predicting that the 2020 General Election season will be one of the nastiest this country has seen.

The former AG observes that globally, there seems to be a change in the tenor of the conduct of politics, and here in T&T, we are mirroring that trend.

He says we got an inkling of what’s to come in the recent Local Government Elections.

And he believes the recent Cabinet reshuffle clearly demonstrates that ‘old school’ politics will continue to dominate the local landscape. 

PM Rowley urges nation to cherish families; think of the children and the elderly

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley is encouraging Trinbagonians to embrace genuine human connection, cherish families, and care about children and the elderly in this country, as the nation heads in 2020 and beyond.

In his New Year’s Address to the Nation, the PM calls on T&T to bring an end to the alienation that is at the heart of some of the social ills currently plaguing the nation, noting that citizens need to put aside their fear of differences and reduce their prejudices.

Opposition Leader shares economic vision in New Year’s message

The opposition United National Congress (UNC) is hoping to win the hearts and minds of the electorate in 2020, with a plan it says will generate as many as 50,000 jobs.

In her New Year’s Address to the Nation, UNC Political Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, points to her party's National Economic Transformation Masterplan, which proposes 12 Key Strategic Prosperity Engines.
