A team of police officers along with the Commissioner of State Lands are at this time at an illegal quarry site in East Trinidad.
One person has been detained by police.
The suspect, however, told police that he is a watchman hired to guard an adjacent piece of land.
At about 11.30 am, as the entourage of police and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture was driving through a dirt track leading to the site, three men who were at the quarry site escaped by running through nearby bushes.
An illegal quarrying operation on state lands in Wallerfield, is shut down, following a joint operation carried out by police and officials of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, a police statement says.
The operation, which involved officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force and officials from the Ministry of Energy, was conducted at Agua Santa Road, Block #5, Wallerfield, between 9:30 am on Wednesday 24th May, 2017 and 12:05 am today, Thursday 25th May, 2017.
A 56-year-old truck driver has been killed in freak accident.
Reports are that around 3pm Wednesday, Ricardo Kato was about to enter his vehicle which was parked in the Claxton Bay quarry when a landslide caused piece of a hill to give way.
He was buried instantly.
Workers say Kato was standing at the bottom of the hill when the land caved in.
Attempts were made to rescue the man but by the time his body was retrieved, he was already dead.
Kato lived in Sobo Village, South Trinidad.
