"I am delighted to send best wishes to my fellow citizens on the joyous occasion of Diwali.
As people across our beloved nation gather to illuminate their homes, their communities and their hearts, I wish Mother Lakshmi’s blessings on each and every one of you and your loved ones.
The following is Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley's Divali address.
"On this Divali day, on behalf of the people and Government of Trinidad and Tobago, I offer warm greetings to our Hindu community.
Today we join you as you celebrate one of the most significant religious observances on the Hindu calendar.
I am always heartened to note that Divali is enjoyed by both Hindus and non-Hindus across the country, as persons journey to family and friends to share a meal and witness the remarkable displays of lighted deyas.
Roman Catholic Archnishop Joseph Harris, is encourging citizens to open their hearts to Dominicans coming to T&T for relief and has asked Catholic school boards to open their doors to students.
The Archbishop of Port-of-Spain said he was pleasantly surprised when Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley announced relaxed immigration restrictions and is encouraging families who can help, to host those who are in need.
The Archbishop issued the following statement:
"My dear sisters and brothers and all people of good will,
The Office of the President has announced that the Act to amend the Marriage Act has been proclaimed.
The statement said that today, just hours after receiving a copy of the Miscellaneous Provision (Marriage) Act, No.8 of 2017 from Cabinet, President Anthony Carmona affixed his seal and signature to the document, proclaiming it law.
The Act No.8 of 2017 - An Act to amend the Marriage Act, was first forwarded to the Office of the President lon June 20, 2017, and on June 22, 2017 it was assented to by the President and returned to the Clerk of the House.
President Anthony Carmona has officially declared Wednesday 18th October, 2017 as the date of the public holiday in celebration of the festival of Divali.
The date has been in the public domain for several months now but unless it's officially declared by the President, it's not yet official.
A statement by the Office of the President made the announcement today, stating that the declaration was in accordance with the provisions of the Public Holidays and Festivals Act.
