Tapir seized by police, one man arrested

A man was arrested by police on Thursday, after he was found carrying a South American Tapir in his car.

A man was arrested by police on Thursday, after he was found carrying a South American Tapir in his car.

According to a police report, game wardens, along with police officers from the Cunupia ERP, intercepted a vehicle in Kelly Village, Caroni, which was carrying the South American Tapir, a juvenile.

The driver was arrested, and the tapir seized.

The man was taken to the Caroni Police Station where he was formally charged for possession of the animal.  He is expected to appear soon in a virtual hearing before a Chaguanas Magistrate.

The exercise was spearheaded by Game Warden II Steve Seepersad and Richard Ramlogan, and included Game Warden I Bisham Madhu, Rajiv Harrinarine, Jason Edwards and MVO Nigel Bishop and Brendon Whittier.
