Three charged with murder

Three persons have been charged with murder arising out of two separate incidents.

The charges were laid by officers of the Region Three Homicide Bureau of Investigations.

In the first matter – a Couva couple was expected to appear before a Chaguanas Magistrate today, charged with the murder of Sylvan Sookram, on November 1.

Dwarika Sookdeo, 53, and his common-law wife Elizabeth Joseph, 50 – both of Mc Bean, were charged with the offence following advice received from the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Joan Honore-Paul, on November 30.

Sookram, 63, was at his California workplace in the company of a male co-worker, on October 19, when the co-worker was visited by a woman known to him. An altercation developed between the victim and the co-worker which turned physical.

During the incident, the victim collapsed and was taken to the Couva Health Facility for treatment.

He was subsequently transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he died on November 1.

The couple were arrested that same day.

Investigations were supervised by Supt Dhillpaul of the HBI Region Three, while the charges were laid by

PC Baboolal on November 30.

And in the second incident – a 34-year-old Siparia man is expected to appear before a Siparia Magistrate today, charged with the murder of Avalon Regis-John, which occurred on March 12.

Kevon Scipio of Sennon Village, was also charged with arson, following advice received from Deputy DPP Honore-Paul, on November 30.

Regis-John, 61, was at her Siparia home on March 12, when neighbours observed the wooden structure engulfed in flames.

They contacted the Siparia Fire Station and officers managed to extinguish the blaze.

The victim’s body was subsequently found amongst the rubble.

The suspect was arrested in connection with the incident on November 26.

Investigations were supervised by Supt Dhillpaul and Insp Hosein of the HBI Region Three.

Scipio was charged by PC Nicholas on November 30.
