Two young women and a man currently are in police custody, in connection with the abduction and robbery of a taxi driver in Fyzabad on Tuesday night.

Guardian Media understands the 39-year-old victim was plying his car for hire around 9 pm on Tuesday 9 February 2021, when he picked up two men and a woman near the Fyzabad taxi stand in Siparia.  The passengers reportedly asked to be taken to Fyzabad.

Police report that upon reaching Market Street, one of the men whipped out a gun and ordered the taxi driver to stop.  They then forced him into the trunk of his white Tiida.

One of the men reportedly said that the victim had seen their faces and they would have to deal with him.  While the car was moving, the taxi driver unlocked the trunk and jumped out. He heard a loud explosion, but the vehicle did not stop.

The taxi driver made a report to the police and an All Points Bulletin was issued to be on the look for the car and the occupants.  Following a high-speed chase, the police intercepted the vehicle in the Couva district.

Police arrested the vehicle’s occupants, two young women and a man.  They also recovered two firearms.

The taxi driver was treated at the Siparia Health Facility and discharged.

Investigations are continuing.
