Well-known Tobago calypsonian and businessman, Alex Gift (also known as Tobago Chalkie) was denied bail this morning, when he appeared in a virtual hearing before a Scarborough Magistrate.

47-year-old Gift, and his wife Verleen Gift, a 47-year-old laborer, were charged with four counts of inflicting grievous bodily harm and one count of assault by beating, respectively. Verleen Gift obtained bail last week.

This was confirmed today by Inspector (Ag.) Pigott of the Tobago Police Division.

Insp Piggott told Guardian Media that Alex Gift was denied bail as his matter falls under the Bail Amendment Act (17) of 2019. He also had a previous matter of a similar nature and was committed to stand trial at the Scarborough Assizes Court.

The Gifts, of Riseland, Carnbee, appeared before the First and Second Magistrates’ Courts, respectively, on charges stemming from an incident in Bon Accord on April 15th, involving their landlady, Sobah Samuel.

According to the police report, Alex Gift allegedly threw a substance on Samuel. His wife allegedly dealt her several blows after an argument broke out over outstanding rent and the construction of a wall on the leased land housing Busy’s Electrical and Hardware Store.

The businessman will reappear in court on May 17, 2021.

His wife’s matter was postponed to August 10, 2021.
