A 40-yer-old man of Signal Hill, Tobago appeared in the Scarborough Magistrates Court on Monday, charged with the possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, after attempting to ship a quantity of cocaine to the United Kingdom in a popular local recipe book.
The incident occurred last Wednesday at the DHL Express Shipping Company, located at the Corporative Mall, Scarborough shortly before 4 pm.
The court heard that John O’Neil of Tranquility Heights, Signal Hill was arrested, after he allegedly gave a 38-year-old woman known to him, of Piccadilly Street, Signal Hill a package containing a Naparima Cook Book to post via the shipping company.
It is alleged, when the package was examined by members of staff from DHL, they found a plastic packet containing cocaine, concealed in the Naparima Cook Book. The dangerous drug weighed 60 grams with a street value of $30,000.
The package was expected to be shipped to an individual in the United Kingdom.
The woman was taken into custody, but was later released without charge. However, following intense investigations by officers from the Special Investigations Unit, O’Neil was arrested and later charged.
When he appeared before Magistrate Duane Murray in the Scarborough First Court, he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He was represented by Attorney Sidonia John. He was then placed on $65,000.00 bail.
