A truck driver who allegedly beat his wife and stabbed his 10-year-old daughter during a domestic dispute has been granted $150,000 bail.

The 35-year-old father of two faced three charges when he appeared virtually before Princes Town magistrate Indira Misir-Gosine.

The charges are choking with intent, cruelty to a child and assault by beating. It is alleged that on January 16 he was armed with a knife while attacking his wife at their home. The child allegedly intervened and was stabbed on her hand.

A report was made to the Princes Town Police and it was referred to the southern Gender Based Violence Unit. Following inquiries spearheaded by ASP Francis, PC Crawford charged the father. Defence attorney Dane Halls made an application for bail.

Fearful that he might interfere with his wife and child, prosecutor Sgt Shazeed Mohammed objected to bail. However, the magistrate granted him bail with conditions.

The father was ordered to immediately move out of his home and stay 500 feet away from his wife and daughter.

The magistrate also warned him to have no communication either directly or indirectly with them.

The matter was adjourned to February 16. (SW)
