Several residents who may have been bracing for life in self-isolation without electricity can breathe a little easier after the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission opted not to disconnect almost 90 per cent of residential customers who were due to have their power cut.

In a release on Thursday, T&TEC announced 87 per cent of residential customers who were due for disconnection have been deferred.

The utility also said, “ in the spirit of the Honourable Prime Minister’s announcement on March 18 regarding providing financial relief for affected citizens during this time, T&TEC immediately increased the qualifying limit for disconnections as a result of nonpayment.”

This they said would “ have a direct impact on customers who are most likely to be experiencing financial vulnerability at this time.”

However, the Commission advised it has kept service centres open to allow customers to pay bills only.

But the commission said that accessing cashiers may take long as social distancing protocols may make lines longer.

T&TEC also reminded that the commission’s website, independent bill payment places and Commercial Banks are also options for payment.

T&TEC said while it has adjusted the way in which it is offering services to customers, all business operations are continuing as normal.
