TTMA supports government lockdown

The Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association (TTMA) says it fully supports the measures outlined by the government to “reel in the escalating rise of active covid 19 cases.” The TTMA also stated they support not closing the manufacturing sector at this time; as such, businesses keeping their doors open is imperative to stimulate the economy, even in a time of limited lockdown. The following is a press release from the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association:

The Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association wishes to state that it is thankful to hear, officially, that the honorable Prime Minister was able to make a full recovery.
The Association understands the challenges the government faces with regard to putting measures in place to secure the lives of the citizenry. The TTMA fully supports the measures outlined by the government to reel in the escalating rise of active covid 19 cases.

It is alarming that 328 persons were recorded as infected today. The behavior of ourselves in a pandemic needs to be in check and so the spiral rise of infected person is not acceptable. Therefore, the TTMA is in agreement that drastic measures are needed to retract the curve as mentioned by the honorable Prime Minister.

The measures outlined by the government are commendable and at the same time understandable; the Association recognizes that resources are limited and whereas the government needs to secure lives of all citizens, it could not have been done at the expense of livelihood.

Therefore, we support not closing the manufacturing sector at this time; as such businesses keeping their doors open is imperative to stimulating the economy, even in a time of limited lockdown.

The manufacturing sector, for the most part, is self-regulating and I am confident we would continue to do all that we can to put all measures in place to safeguard our workers and ourselves from the exposure to the virus. At the same time, allowing manufacturing to remain open would not only allow for maintenance of jobs, production and manufacturing, it will allowed for the continued earning of the valued Foreign Exchange for the country.
It must be noted that the closure of bars and restaurants will mean no curb side service.

As such this will affect many within our manufacturing sector. We are cognizant that this needed short-term measure will be in effect until May 23rd. TTMA is therefore hopeful that this short-term measure will bring the desire result and normal business operations can be resumed thereafter.
I am making a passionate plea to the manufacturing sector of the economy to continue to be as vigilant as they have been thus far, continue to secure the lives of your most valued resource – your human resource and adhere to the measures the government has put in place to curb the spread of the virus in our blessed country.
