Two men were remanded into custody when they appeared before a San Fernando Magistrate yesterday charged with multiple fraud offences. Sopranius Young, 49, of Santa Cruz, and Anthony Ramlal, 67, of Gasparillo, were charged when they appeared before Magistrate Rajendra Rambachan, in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Young was charged with obtaining property valued at $29,000 by false pretences, uttering a forged valuable security, receiving stolen property, and forgery of a Trinidad and Tobago Identification Card. Ramlal was charged with obtaining property valued at $29,000 by false pretences and two counts of receiving stolen property.
They are expected to reappear in court on May 3rd 2021.

According to police reports, the charges stemmed from multiple incidents between June 2020 and April 2021, where the accused allegedly ordered goods from several victims and effected payments for said goods by way of cheques.

The cheques were subsequently found to be fraudulent and attempts to contact the men proved futile. Reports were made to the Fraud Squad and investigations launched.

The men were arrested during an exercise on April 21st conducted in the Central Division, which was coordinated by Snr. Supt. Arlet Groome, Supt. Ruben, Insp. Bachoo and Sgt. Seepersad. Charges were laid by Cpl (Ag.) Mohammed and PCs Jemmet and Williams of the Fraud Squad. Officers were able to recover quantities of the goods delivered to the accused during the course of their investigations.
