Two men, ages 55 and 63 years, were granted bail after appearing virtually in separate matters before the Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court last Friday, to answer to assault charges against their spouses.
One man is to face the courts again later in December 2021, while the other will go before the courts in May 2022.
Sangre Grande accused
In the first case, a 55-year-old Sangre Grande man was arrested by officers of the Eastern Division Gender-Based Violence Unit (GBVU) on November 24th, 2021, after five separate reports were made against him during the period of September 13th to November 16th, 2021. He was charged on November 25th, 2021, with five counts of assault by threats, two counts of assault by beating, and one count of malicious damage.
The accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was granted $275,000 bail with a surety. He also was ordered to stay 100 metres away from his spouse. He is scheduled to reappear in court on December 17th, 2021.
According to police reports, at 6 pm on August 22nd, 2021, the accused allegedly behaved in an aggressive manner towards a woman after she refused to answer his questions about her whereabouts. He allegedly became angry and dealt her several blows to her head with his hands causing injuries. He also allegedly destroyed several of her belongings, valued at $6,450 during the altercation, and threatened to kill her if she called the police.
The woman reported the matter to the police and received medical attention at hospital.
The accused also allegedly went to her home and made threats to kill her on two occasions—one in September and another in October 2021. Police were told there were other similar incidents that occurred. The matter was investigated by WPC Ramsaran.
In the second matter, a 63-year-old Salybia man was arrested by officers on November 28th, 2021, in relation to an incident that occurred on November 23rd, 2021. He was subsequently charged on November 29th, with possession of a weapon with intent and common assault.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted $200,000 bail. He also was ordered to stay 100 metres away from his spouse, as well as to have no communication with her whatsoever. He is scheduled to reappear in court on May 6th, 2022.
According to police reports, at 7:30 pm on November 23rd, 2021, the accused, while intoxicated, allegedly had a disagreement with a woman at his home. He became angry and allegedly approached the woman and swung a piece of metal pipe at her.
Police were also told that the man allegedly armed himself with a cutlass and threatened to kill her.
A report was made to the Matura Police Station and investigations were conducted by WPC Farrier.
Both investigations were supervised by Supt (Ag.) Guy-Alleyne and W/Insp Bacchus.
The matters were heard by Magistrate Cheron Raphael.
