Two Venezuelan nationals charged with possession of cocaine denied bail

Venezuelan nationals Oscar Enrique Cordoza Gillegas, 24, and Angel Garcia, 21, were denied bail when they appeared virtually before Magistrate Adrian Darmanie at the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court, today charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Gillegas of Caroni Savannah Road, Charlieville and Garcia 21, of King Street, Princes Town were charged on December 14th. The matter is postponed to January 12th, 2022.

According to police reports, on 14th December at around 7.30 am officers of the Port of Spain E-999 unit were on mobile patrol on the Uriah Butler Highway when they observed two Venezuelan nationals in a vehicle, a driver and a front-seat passenger. The driver was driving in a dangerous manner.

The officers attempted to stop the vehicle utilizing the police siren and swivel. The driver refused to stop, and instead, increased the speed of the vehicle, which then ran off the roadway and crashed into the drain. The men then fled the vehicle, a chase ensued, and the men were subsequently held a short distance away. During a search of the vehicle, two packets of cocaine were discovered in a pink bag. The total combined weight of the cocaine seized was 2.5 kilogrammes. Both men were subsequently arrested and charged.
