The motion to adopt the Joint Select Committee(JSC) of Parliament report on the Constitution Amendment Tobago Self-Government Bills 2020, was voted on by 22 People’s National Movement’s (PNM) members on June 29, 2021.
The opposition United National Congress(UNC) walked out during the debate.
They cited the additional 60 minutes given to the political leader of the People’s National Movement and Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley to speak during the debate.
Earlier in the session, JSC Chairman Camille Robinson-Regis gave up her speaking time to the Prime Minister.
The opposition objected to the increased time, interrupting the Speaker of the House Brigid Annisette-George even after she allowed the additional time.
UNC’s area representative for Couva South Rudranath Indarsingh apologized for the interruptions.
However, soon after UNC’s leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar could be heard objecting to the extra time. The UNC walked out.
In wounding up the debate, prime minister and political leader of Dr. Keith Rowley trounced the opposition United National Congress (UNC) for not putting forward any amendments.
He added the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) and other
” PNM’s political opponents” to the blows.
He said the lack of support for the report is typical of UNC’s “strange behaviour” and their stated stance that they will not support anything the PNM does. He listed the bills the opposition did not support, including the Public Health Ordinance to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The report has moved into the committee stage. The House is adjourned until tomorrow at 10:30 am.
