Water issues in Central and South West Trinidad

Reduced production at the Point Lisas Desalination Plant is the reason for the low water pressures or no water supplies which residents in Central and South West Trinidad have been experiencing over the past couple of days.

Reduced production at the Point Lisas Desalination Plant is the reason for the low water pressures or no water supplies which residents in Central and South West Trinidad have been experiencing over the past couple of days.

A release issued by the Water and Sewerage Authority explains that on Saturday 12th December 2020, there was an unplanned shutdown of the facility for approximately seven hours.  It subsequently was restarted at reduced production of 29 million gallons per day (mgd) due to ongoing emergency repairs at the Plant.

WASA notes that the Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (DESALCOTT) owned and operated Plant normally supplies the Authority with 40 million gallons of water daily. However, the Plant will deliver reduced production throughout the period of repairs.

Repairs to the Plant are expected to be completed by midnight, today, Monday 14th December 2020.

WASA is asking customers to manage their water use efficiently, as it may take up to 24 hours for the supply to normalize to some affected areas after the Plant returns to full operation.

The Authority also advises that a limited truck-borne water service will be available with priority given to special homes, health care and government institutions.
